Bato Bato Plate: For the Love of Food Served in Stoneware
For our first experience, we only got to use a pot.

In our last post, I told you I haven’t been eatsploring around Leonard Wood and beyond lately. Just as I was talking with eatsplorer Aya about Chef Didier’s Table, a message from foodie friend, Sir Dan popped up with a long list of restaurant recommendations he noticed weren’t on our checklist. The first one he had there was Batobato Plate, a newly opened restaurant in one of the spaces at Albergo Hotel. (Whoa, Sir Dan’s food spotting skills, right, fellow foodies? *bow bow)
Taking a sneak peek in their Facebook page, their resto name finally made sense to me, seeing that they served their dishes on stone plates and stone pots. Having good experiences eating from stone pots, off we went to Villamor Street the next day. There for brunch, we already had in mind a couple of dishes to try out from this Korean-Western restaurant but we were informed that the chefs who made the Western dishes weren’t in just yet. =( We were left to choose from one panel of the menu, the Korean foods line up.

I went for the albap, picturing in my mind the popping boba sensation the roe there had to offer with every bite. This arrived crackling hot with a side dish platter, and artistic bowls of kimchi and a sea weed banchan. I had to give it a few minutes before I could start eating since even after mixing everything, it was still scorching. *uha-hot-hot

I might have made a mistake in going “bibim” … mix … on the caviar because the popping sensation I was anticipating was lost. There I was, left with thousands of tiny fried eggs. Dang! It might have been that the pot was a tad blistering too because the socarrat that I was also excited to scrape from the bottom of the bowl wasn’t limited to the bottom. As I kept mixing, uber fried, crunchy rice spread everywhere. *crunch crunch I also found myself wondering if they ‘got chujang’ gochujang just to add some other flavors to my bowl.

Race munched on a buldak burrito while I sort of labored through my breakfast. Stuffed with rice, veggies, and chicken bits, it called to mind kimchi fried rice … wrapped in pita. My better half noted that maybe it would’ve been even better if the veggies were spread around. Texture wise, the bites just got somewhat monotonous, he said. I took a bite or two from this small wrap and the gochujang in there made my mouth so much hotter, I could’ve spewed fire a la dragon. Whoo-zah.

Good thing, there was this side dish. Made mostly of sea weed strips, I suddenly missed miyeok guk. For its saluyot-y consistency, it was mega refreshing to the palate. \m/

When we were done with mains, we debated whether we should get dessert. To be frank, we were a bit apprehensive that the only dessert, a shaved ice dessert was going to be just that: Shaved ice and whatever topping we picked out. =b After our attendant explained that the ‘ice’ was made of pure milk, we confidently placed an order for matcha shaved ice.

As we waited for our panghimagas, we were asked if we wanted a complimentary cup of coffee. You know who the taker is. A small cup of good (bitter strong, I thought *hee) coffee, Race said he’d gladly get another cup when we come a-visiting here again. (Thank you for this, BatoBatoPlate.)
Green tea shaved ice dessert (“,)
This Korean bingsu was a wondrous sight. It was a huge serving with a dish almost a foot in length. One teaspoon of it shoveled into our gobs and we went ohhh with the texture and the cooling effect of the melting milk shards. Probably what eating snow would feel like, Race mused. The matcha flavors were delightful as well. ^^,

X marks Bato Bato Plate for good food in Baguio. Bato, bato, plate! Or should I say, “Gawi, bawi … jeobsi” (I do hope that jeobsi is right. YouTube and Google Translate ha, don’t fail me. =) ) (I do remember the Korean kids at the academy going “gawi, bawi, bo” when they picked team members for their games. Ahh, memories. (“,) )

Hi there, Mario! Heehaha, hindi naman. Batobato Plate opens at 10 a.m. and we were there 10:30-ish, almost 11:00. =b We were told the chefs for the western dishes would be arriving after, after 1:00. Weird no?
So right, the side dishes were scant. To be fair, that’s just an accompaniment to my albap order. The burritos, I think doesn’t have that.
Bato Bato Plate is just a month old, they’ve still a lot of time to get better as the days progress. *hihi
