La Trinidad Food Adventure: Yasuragi Japanese Restaurant
And we’re back checking out eating places at our neighbor’s, La Trinidad – our quick fix for eats beyond the borders of Baguio. Thanks, L.T.!
Thanks, also, to Chef V of Mama’s Table, we knew exactly where to go. Well, sort of. The only notation in her photo was Japanese restaurant in the vicinity of the strawberry farm, and I was too shy to ask outright so out recon riding, Race and I went … with Race going ‘we might not be able to find it since there are many different roads leading to the strawberry fields’, every now and then. =b
(UPDATE 08/09/2017: Yasuragi Japanese Cuisine moved to food trip city, Baguio City. Address at the end of this post.)
Anyway, we did a quick pit stop at the farm, 1) because the restaurant might just be right where the visitors park their cars when they go strawberry picking, and 2) because it occurred to me that I’ve never really been to strawberry farm. Not that I remember. *hee
We got there just as the sun was setting. Dizzy with hunger (yep, no lunchies yet), we quickly bought some strawberry ice cream from the first sorbetero that called to us. (Funny, he treated us like we were tourists. *hihi) Shyeew, that was close; that quick berry sugar rush kept the floaty heads at bay and sustained us enough to continue riding around strawberry farm.
Out of the parking lot, we continued on the road away from Halsema, going to Puguis when Race saw an orange/gray building looming in the horizon. A Yasuragi sign at the tippy top confirmed it’s just what we were looking for. I crossed my fingers they were not closed yet and yey, for the universe hearing me for as we pulled into their lot, the Japanese looking (just looks) manong standing out front welcomed us. =)
Boy, were there a number of Japanese dishes on their menu. It was a good thing also that the chef (Japanese looking manong) stayed with us to guide us through the ordering process (for translation and/or extra description, you see). As soon as we picked out what to eat, we were given a pot of tea. I say, that’s probably the most green tea tasting starter tea I’ve ever had. *sip ahh Comforted by the tea’s warmth, I ordered another warm thing, a bowl of shake/salmon soup which tasted a lot like Philippine sinigang.
Our lun(ch)-(din)ner got underway with Yasuragi’s trademark makimono and the huge futo maki. What a wonder the rolls Chef Roland made! A lovely roll worthy of ohhs and ahhs was yasuragi with strawberry slivers on top. The wasabi beside it, shaped into a flower. =D
The futo maki also got some wows out of us because it was double the size of the single rolls of the strawberry topped maki. As big as my ear one roll was; a mouthful and tummy filling too.
In spite of that, Race and I still got mains. Mine, the momoiro udon that was like a Japanese version pasta that tasted like a mild baked mac with bits of seafood (fish, crabstick, squid) here and there.
Race got the toriton katsudon which is chicken fillet resting (resting, hah!)… and ready to sustain Race on rice, served with teriyaki sauce for extra taste.
Feeling full as I was with the rice packed rolls and pasta, I was dying to try something from the desserts section … any dessert. This visit, it was strawberry ice cream with red beans. While delish, I felt the red beans went better with matcha ice cream. It is possible however, very possible, strawberry farm strawberry ice cream overload is speaking here. I’ve never eaten strawberry farm signature ice cream before and on the day I did, I over did it. One time, big time, man!
All through the holiday season, I was dying to revisit Yasuragi, 1) for more of Chef Roland’s pretty maki creations, and 2) I wanted to see for myself how it looks when the sun is high, when you can see the field from one side of the resto. Whoa, how long we had to put it off it seemed, all in the name of avoiding the droves of visitors to the location. #introvert
Finally, the holidays are over and here we are at Yasuragi again. Rolls upon rolls and makis, we got. ^^,
First, the unagi roll. That sort of stuck with me from talking about it so much in our first visit. We couldn’t have it then since no Japan imported eel was available. Chef explained, the local ones are a bit muddy tasting and weren’t right for rolls. Interesting.
I was in for a surprise with the rainbow maki. In comparison to what we’ve seen around the city before, this had not a grain of rice in it. Just a variety of sashimi bits wrapped with cucumber and mango cubes.
After the mushy like texture of the raw fish from the rich rainbow rolls, we got a crunchy twist in the deep fried crunchy salmon that had a creamy squirt in the bite due to the cream cheese inside. *crunch crunch squish
After the crunch, we gave our taste buds a jolt from the tsunami roll made of spicy raw tuna, tempura bits, rice, nori and topped with cheese.
After popping a couple rolls into our gobs, we realized one cannot dine on makizushi alone, and so we got sukiyaki. It was only when we were almost finished that we realized we didn’t eat that glass noodle dish the proper way. We ate it like it was shabu shabu … ramen even. There I was reacting on how intense the ‘soup’ was, forgetting that’s not soup but sauce. We didn’t even dip the veggies and the beef in the scrambled raw egg. (We just add one egg-ed it in the pot.) I know right. Noobs =)) We’ll try that again another time, the right way.
Again, the desserts section called, nay, screamed at me despite the fullness. Till now, I’m still patting myself on the back for making the very good choice of the coffee jelly with ice cream. That was to die for!!! How is it possible that something so simple (two main components, jelly and ice cream) can be so fabulous? \m/
