Destination Chow: Mt. Santo Tomas (Cafe in the Sky and Baguio Dairy Farm)
On second thought, I’ve a final-final dining tip before the year ends.
Here it goes.
We always wanted to joyride to Sto. Tomas but it was either the road wasn’t drive-able yet or our eatsploring mobile was not in tip top condition. With all factors coming together now, Race and I set off.
It was only after that ride and a return trip to see what’s available at the dairy farm that I heard about Cafe in the Sky from Jo.

(I guess) Inspired by the 2014 ABS CBN teleserye, Forevermore, this view deck, cafe, and bed and breakfast opened, if only to feed and provide a resting place for the fans going on the long journey up the mountain to see one of the filming locations, Sitio La Presa (and probably to get a glimpse of the actors) nearby. (Scroll down for the map and directions.)
Please let me correct myself here: As of February 27, 2016, I now know for a fact, that the cafe was opened actually as a rest stop for the people going on hikes or bike treks up the mountain. Just timing that Forevermore also happened to be filming their strawberry field shots nearby.

I didn’t recall seeing a cafe or even a sign of a cafe near the radar where it allegedly was and it’s thanks to a friend, Cheryl, that we pinpointed its exact location. (Shout out to you! Thanks much!) It IS just a kilometer before the radar and it was the newly built building I was ogling then, envying it for the view it had. =)
Sky rice =D
The Mt. Kabuyao restaurant is a spacious dining area like the space for living room and dining room for a house combined. With its high ceiling, it felt even larger. *echo echo! It also has seats in front of a fireplace which I imagine would be oh, so cozy to hang out at with a fire roaring on a chilly day … which happens pretty fast and often since it’s mega windy up top and when the fog rolls in, it gets even more so. (Don’t forget your jackets/coats, eatcentrics!)

The selections at the cafe are pretty straightforward; breakfast, appetizers, rice toppings, vegetables, noodles and pasta dishes, hot platters, desserts and hot and cold beverages. X+1 took our picks from the rice topping selection: sky rice and Kung Fu chicken rice.

Composed of the rice topping plate regulars: crunchy veggies, scrumptious fried chicken, a delectable piece of liempo, and rice topped with a fried egg; sky rice was the perfect choice for us … we, who forgot to eat something before going on the trip to Mount St. Thomas. =b Just like that, with a few spoonfuls of Kung Fu chicken also, chicken with a light kick of a sauce, our growling tummies were silenced.

We had enough energy to go … ehem, I should say, I … I had renewed energy to go cam whore with the sea of clouds and the green slope where the Mickey Mouse ears-like radar stands as my backdrop. =D
UPDATE 12/22/2014: Extra photo ideas (hopefully the clouds cooperate in your visit, too \m/ \m/). Finally, the shots I envisioned taken. Like I could almost dive into the sea of clouds … and X as a Mouseketeer. Wee!
We got an order of the crispy sky rolls as well as a plate of sliced fresh strawberries with cream for extra munchies as we enjoyed watching the cloud cover build up and dissipate over Baguio City.

Stark contrasts these two dishes were. It’s zingy and spicy (that was one fine dip!) for the appetizer; and lightly sweet (thanks to the sprinkles) and succulent for the dessert. No doubt, we were pretty pleased with all our choices at Cafe in the Sky. (“,)

X marks Cafe in the Sky for good food in (metro) Baguio. With everything that the resto/viewdeck/bed and breakfast has to offer; the long, winding drive up is totally worth it.
Food: 
Simple, staple selections but a good enough offering (and so far the only source of sustenance) in the far flung neighborhood of Mt. Kabuyao.

Ambiance: 
Together with your jacket (full blast air con in this area *snickers), you might want to bring a pair of sunglasses, too. Yowzah, the bright white clouds! “I gotta wear shades.”

UPDATE 12/29/2015: Got it directly from the horse’s mouth that Cafe in the Sky IS NOT CLOSED. However, visitors in their personal vehicles or taxis are being prevented from going up the mountain at the police outpost by DENR and police (due to Writ of Kalikasan implementation). I’m sure they’re getting this issue sorted out (whether or not the cafe and B&B is included under this writ together with La Presa); while they do that, let us please be patient and enjoy the view from elsewhere in the city.
UPDATE 02/28/2016: You might have watched the GMA News TV Pop Talk feature on Cafe in the Sky last night. Again, Cafe in the Sky IS NOT CLOSED. However, visitors in their personal vehicles or taxis are being prevented from going up the mountain at the police outpost by DENR and police (due to Writ of Kalikasan implementation on La Presa). Please MAKE A RESERVATION WITH CAFE IN THE SKY (contact numbers below) so that they know you’re coming and they can come for you at the checkpoint just in case you are stopped. You can also TAKE A JEEPNEY to the cafe. Their jeepney station is located at Shagem Street, (pinned on Google Maps here.) somewhere near A Hotel. (Just ask the drivers which ones go up to Cafe in the Sky.)
UPDATE 01/12/2019: I just watched a Youtube video from The Juicy Vlog where they attempted to go up to Cafe in the Sky but were stopped at the check point. Let me just say outright for you to avoid any disappointment and effort that the ROAD TO Cafe in the Sky IS CLOSED to tourists. Take heart, if you’re gunning for Sto. Tomas for the view, you can still drive up and stop for a bit on the road before that check point as the view isn’t limited to the cafe premises.
It’s just so annoying though that I’m hearing stories about some people getting in and some people not, and issues about some kind of sleazy taxi service just to get there. If it’s not allowed, it shouldn’t be allowed PERIOD. Or why don’t they just do it like the Underground River, Palawan where there’s a registered set number of people who can go there per day, like 50 or whatever (No going beyond the cafe location to the farms and the radar even, if it makes the powers that be happy.); and these people pay an environmental fee for the upkeep of the surroundings and also, heavily penalize violators? (Like littering because really, that’s the worst you could do there; Cafe in the Sky is just offering a view. What bad could you do to a view?) Geez, Louise.

(I thought about doing a feature on the whole mountain just so I won’t have to use that corny title above. =)) It’s a wonderful song, mind you. Great lyrics from the talented band, Side A … but I don’t think it will work as a food blog post title. *hee
I’m assuming this is the bed and breakfast. Pretty nice digs, no? UPDATE 12/20/2014: This is not the B&B but Cafe in the Sky’s owner’s house. Still, a fab place to stay… I’d live there. *harhar The rooms for rent are under the cafe according to my good friend. (Ongoing construction, from what I saw then).
Note that this will be Destination Chow: Mount Cabuyao/Santo Tomas, part 1, too, as I’m foreseeing a ton of other places opening in the vicinity soon. I’ve already seen a couple on our most recent coming round the mountain and we’ll get to them, sure enough … in 2015.)

Where the milk is tasty creamy; and the yougurt is thick, just the right kind of sour, and surely, it isn’t packed with sugar. The cheese reminded me of feta although it didn’t taste like anything to me. I would have to consult with my cook/baker friends about what to do with the little blocks I got. *harhar
Fresh milk, yoghurt and cheese *nomnomnom
With the cows being milked twice a day, at 4:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., you’re sure to get the freshest dairy product you could ever wish for. They’re open as early as 7:00 a.m. and close as late as 7:00 p.m. so it’s easy to stock your fridge up with yoghurt of various flavors (strawberry, blueberry, mango,pandan, melon, plain), milk and cheese … after a nice sightseeing excursion. Super nice and friendly receptionist as well; thank you so much, Maam. \m/
Around the dairy farm … looking for the cows. (They’re out pasturing … further away, we didn’t see them.)
The milk from this Mountain High Dairy might just be the only milk I’ll drink from now on … and with gusto, too.

Hello there, Jon! There’s a stark contrast from traffic flow the day of the writing of this post to today, lots of cars and FX taxis coming and going.
Just ask the taxi driver first if they’d like to take you up to Sto. Tomas. Our estimate would be that it would cost around P130 to go up the mountain from Cathedral depending on how heavy the traffic is.
Please be careful though, I’ve recently heard stories about some unscrupulous people overcharging for the ride. That said, I hope you enjoy your time at Cafe in the Sky/Sitio Pungayan! Thank you for visiting the blog! (“,)

Hello there, aries. Sightseeing in Sto. Tomas is the prettiest I think early morning and midday when the clouds are just rolling in. They sometimes get too thick in the afternoon that there’s nothing to see but white.
If it’s a clear night, a Cafe in the Sky dinner would be nice as you can see the lights from Baguio City in the distance that looks almost like a system of constellations, or even a really small galaxy *hihi.

UPDATE 12/29/2015: Got it directly from the horse’s mouth that Cafe in the Sky IS NOT CLOSED. However, visitors in their personal vehicles or taxis are being prevented from going up the mountain at the police outpost by DENR and police (due to Writ of Kalikasan implementation). I’m sure they’re getting this issue sorted out (whether or not the cafe and B&B is included under this writ together with La Presa); while they do that, let us please be patient and enjoy the view from elsewhere in the city.
It’s so much fun to read your blog. Great, You been updating 👏👏 .may I add a few tips or info to fellow travelers who would want to go there. As per dec26, 2015,we have been there. Commute lng jeep fare at 25php @ (asks the locals where is the terminal) otherwise it is located here (Abanao St. Just down from City Hall and Rizal park.) it’s a 40minute ride.road is OK. Tell the driver to drop U at The cafe. U know locals are kind if u talk to them right.
We were there like 1:30 the weather is perfect. I suggest u to be early. In the afternoon u hardly get a ride going back to the city. We walk down like an hour and then some kind residents hitch us in there car. We stop by at the police station, checkpoint it is,.there are jeeps here going to the city. As we waited, several tourists with private cars And even rented taxis are Stopped and sent back. There is a city ordinance for the closure of LA presa. I read it also in Midland courier and seen on local tv
.the police are saying the cafe is closed too. They were telling those who booked earlier are only allowed. In my mind how come we aren’t sent back? This is a tip. Ride a jeep😄😅😃 .

I did hear that riding a jeep to get to Cafe in the Sky is the best way today. Lots of hullabaloo over this Writ and with some people spreading news that the cafe is closed. Made me wonder why it’s included when it’s mainly offering a resto service in a great spot for a fantastic view. Nothing destructive there. (Might want to get some kind of pre-registration like they do for Palawan’s Underground River to keep the number of people up the mountain in check *hihi for traffic’s sake and for the residents’ too.)

Please MAKE A RESERVATION WITH CAFE IN THE SKY so that they know you’re coming and they can come for you at the checkpoint just in case you are stopped. You can also TAKE A JEEPNEY to the cafe. Hello, Sheila May! Getting to Cafe in the Sky is a little bit tricky now with DENR stopping (some) people from going up the mountain. Please do make a reservation with the cafe so that they have a heads up that you’re coming on May 7th.

Not near the city but a nice place to pass some time, walking up and down the hills when the cows are out to pasture and i think if you send word to them in advance, you can also watch the milking process a la field trip. Hello there, Katherine Alon! Apologies for the late reply. I haven’t been to Cafe in the Sky recently but I am rooting for you to get to see and experience it there. Based on one of the comments here from Ala, fare is P25. (Do look for that comment on the thread. A 2016 comment, I think that was.)
Jeeps are a bit scarce going down to the checkpoint but I think it would be a good ‘little’ walk. From the checkpoint, taxis and jeeps abound. I hope this helps. I wish you success in this endeavor. Happy Baguio vacay! (“,)

UPDATE 01/12/2019: I just watched a Youtube video from The Juicy Vlog where they attempted to go up to Cafe in the Sky but were stopped at the check point. Let me just say outright for you to avoid any disappointment and effort that the ROAD TO Cafe in the Sky IS CLOSED to tourists. Take heart, if you’re gunning for Sto. Tomas for the view, you can still drive up and stop for a bit on the road before that check point as the view isn’t limited to the cafe premises.
It’s just so annoying though that I’m hearing stories about some people getting in and some people not, and issues about some kind of sleazy taxi service just to get there. If it’s not allowed, it shouldn’t be allowed PERIOD. Or why don’t they just do it like the Underground River, Palawan where there’s a registered set number of people who can go there per day, like 50 or whatever (No going beyond the cafe location to the farms and the radar even, if it makes the powers that be happy.); and these people pay an environmental fee for the upkeep of the surroundings and also, heavily penalize violators? (Like littering because really, that’s the worst you could do there; Cafe in the Sky is just offering a view. What bad could you do to a view?) Geez, Louise.
2/3/19 We went all the way up to the end of the road. At the check point, the guard would not let us go through. However, we were able to talk him to let us go through. I am not sure why after a few conversation, he finally relented to let us drive through. His is last word was “sigue na nga , senior po pala kayo. Huwag lang po kayong magtatagal”. There were four of us and we are all senior. There are many damage areas of the road, which made it dangerous. It was a comfortable for a slow drive – ideal for sight seeing – because we were alone on the road. As for the inn, We did not see any sign of it because we were not looking for it.
In 1953, I was there. What I remember is a large building which could be a restaurant or hotel with a beautiful garden of many milflores flowering shrubs. The awesome sight of the provinces of Pangasinan and La union and the sea. Can any one can confirm of the existence of the resort? That was many years ago and I was in my teens.
