Destination Chow: Mt. Santo Tomas (Cafe in the Sky and Baguio Dairy Farm)

On second thought, I’ve a final-final dining tip before the year ends.

Here it goes.

We always wanted to joyride to Sto. Tomas but it was either the road wasn’t drive-able yet or our eatsploring mobile was not in tip top condition. With all factors coming together now, Race and I set off.

Baguio Sto Tomas Cafe in the Sky view of the sea of clouds

Writing my name over the sea of clouds … because maybe again … =b

It was only after that ride and a return trip to see what’s available at the dairy farm that I heard about Cafe in the Sky from Jo.

Cafe in the Sky: ♪ ♫ You’re All I Need to Be with Forevermore ♫

Please scroll down for updated information (UPDATE 12/29/2015).

Please scroll down for more updated information (UPDATE 02/28/2016).

Please scroll down for UPDATE 01/12/2019.

(I guess) Inspired by the 2014 ABS CBN teleserye, Forevermore, this view deck, cafe, and bed and breakfast opened, if only to feed and provide a resting place for the fans going on the long journey up the mountain to see one of the filming locations, Sitio La Presa (and probably to get a glimpse of the actors) nearby. (Scroll down for the map and directions.)

Please let me correct myself here: As of February 27, 2016, I now know for a fact, that the cafe was opened actually as a rest stop for the people going on hikes or bike treks up the mountain. Just timing that Forevermore also happened to be filming their strawberry field shots nearby.

The view from another part of the mountain. *contented sighs

I didn’t recall seeing a cafe or even a sign of a cafe near the radar where it allegedly was and it’s thanks to a friend, Cheryl, that we pinpointed its exact location. (Shout out to you! Thanks much!) It IS just a kilometer before the radar and it was the newly built building I was ogling then, envying it for the view it had. =)

Baguio Sto Tomas Cafe in the Sky sky rice

Sky rice =D

The Mt. Kabuyao restaurant is a spacious dining area like the space for living room and dining room for a house combined.  With its high ceiling, it felt even larger. *echo echo! It also has seats in front of a fireplace which I imagine would be oh, so cozy to hang out at with a fire roaring on a chilly day … which happens pretty fast and often since it’s mega windy up top and when the fog rolls in, it gets even more so. (Don’t forget your jackets/coats, eatcentrics!)

The spacious cafe

The selections at the cafe are pretty straightforward; breakfast, appetizers, rice toppings, vegetables, noodles and pasta dishes, hot platters, desserts and hot and cold beverages. X+1 took our picks from the rice topping selection: sky rice and Kung Fu chicken rice.

Baguio Sto Tomas Cafe in the Sky kung fu chicken rice

Kung Fu chicken rice

Composed of the rice topping plate regulars: crunchy veggies, scrumptious fried chicken, a delectable piece of liempo, and rice topped with a fried egg; sky rice was the perfect choice for us … we, who forgot to eat something before going on the trip to Mount St. Thomas. =b Just like that, with a few spoonfuls of Kung Fu chicken also, chicken with a light kick of a sauce, our growling tummies were silenced.

enjoying the view at Baguio Sto Tomas Cafe in the Sky

Camera whoring moves. So thrilled with the ‘cloudy’ view. \m/

We had enough energy to go … ehem, I should say, I … I had renewed energy to go cam whore with the sea of clouds and the green slope where the Mickey Mouse ears-like radar stands as my backdrop. =D

UPDATE 12/22/2014: Extra photo ideas (hopefully the clouds cooperate in your visit, too \m/ \m/). Finally, the shots I envisioned taken. Like I could almost dive into the sea of clouds … and X as a Mouseketeer. Wee!

We got an order of the crispy sky rolls as well as a plate of sliced fresh strawberries with cream for extra munchies as we enjoyed watching the cloud cover build up and dissipate over Baguio City.

Baguio Sto Tomas Cafe in the Sky crispy sky rolls

Crispy sky rolls ^^,

Stark contrasts these two dishes were.  It’s zingy and spicy (that was one fine dip!) for the appetizer; and lightly sweet (thanks to the sprinkles) and succulent for the dessert.  No doubt, we were pretty pleased with all our choices at Cafe in the Sky. (“,)

X marks Cafe in the Sky for good food in (metro) Baguio. With everything that the resto/viewdeck/bed and breakfast has to offer; the long, winding drive up is totally worth it.

Food: 4 treasure chests Simple, staple selections but a good enough offering (and so far the only source of sustenance) in the far flung neighborhood of Mt. Kabuyao.

Service: 4 treasure chests

Ambiance: 5 treasure chests Together with your jacket (full blast air con in this area *snickers), you might want to bring a pair of sunglasses, too. Yowzah, the bright white clouds! “I gotta wear shades.”

Price: 4 treasure chests

UPDATE 12/29/2015: Got it directly from the horse’s mouth that Cafe in the Sky IS NOT CLOSED. However, visitors in their personal vehicles or taxis are being prevented from going up the mountain at the police outpost by DENR and police (due to Writ of Kalikasan implementation). I’m sure they’re getting this issue sorted out (whether or not the cafe and B&B is included under this writ together with La Presa); while they do that, let us please be patient and enjoy the view from elsewhere in the city.

UPDATE 02/28/2016: You might have watched the GMA News TV Pop Talk feature on Cafe in the Sky last night. Again, Cafe in the Sky IS NOT CLOSED. However, visitors in their personal vehicles or taxis are being prevented from going up the mountain at the police outpost by DENR and police (due to Writ of Kalikasan implementation on La Presa). Please MAKE A RESERVATION WITH CAFE IN THE SKY (contact numbers below) so that they know you’re coming and they can come for you at the checkpoint just in case you are stopped. You can also TAKE A JEEPNEY to the cafe. Their jeepney station is located at Shagem Street, (pinned on Google Maps here.) somewhere near A Hotel. (Just ask the drivers which ones go up to Cafe in the Sky.)

UPDATE 01/12/2019: I just watched a Youtube video from The Juicy Vlog where they attempted to go up to Cafe in the Sky but were stopped at the check point. Let me just say outright for you to avoid any disappointment and effort that the ROAD TO Cafe in the Sky IS CLOSED to tourists. Take heart, if you’re gunning for Sto. Tomas for the view, you can still drive up and stop for a bit on the road before that check point as the view isn’t limited to the cafe premises.

It’s just so annoying though that I’m hearing stories about some people getting in and some people not, and issues about some kind of sleazy taxi service just to get there. If it’s not allowed, it shouldn’t be allowed PERIOD. Or why don’t they just do it like the Underground River, Palawan where there’s a registered set number of people who can go there per day, like 50 or whatever (No going beyond the cafe location to the farms and the radar even, if it makes the powers that be happy.); and these people pay an environmental fee for the upkeep of the surroundings and also, heavily penalize violators? (Like littering because really, that’s the worst you could do there; Cafe in the Sky is just offering a view. What bad could you do to a view?) Geez, Louise.

Cafe in the Sky

(Directions to the radar station through Google Maps here. The cafe is just a few meters before the radar and Sitio Pungayan/Sitio La Presa in Forevermore teleserye is about 500 meters behind the radar – a short dirtroad walk to it; you’ll know it’s the right spot when you see a long line of cars parked on the side of the paved main road.  See attached screen shot below.)

See, right under the red arrow, that’s the cafe/view deck/bed and breakfast. Photo from our first ride out to the top … didn’t see Cafe in the Sky then. *hihi

(I thought about doing a feature on the whole mountain just so I won’t have to use that corny title above. =)) It’s a wonderful song, mind you. Great lyrics from the talented band, Side A … but I don’t think it will work as a food blog post title. *hee

Baguio Sto Tomas Cafe in the Sky the bed and breakfast

I’m assuming this is the bed and breakfast. Pretty nice digs, no? UPDATE 12/20/2014: This is not the B&B but Cafe in the Sky’s owner’s house. Still, a fab place to stay… I’d live there. *harhar  The rooms for rent are under the cafe according to my good friend. (Ongoing construction, from what I saw then).

Note that this will be Destination Chow: Mount Cabuyao/Santo Tomas, part 1, too, as I’m foreseeing a ton of other places opening in the vicinity soon.  I’ve already seen a couple on our most recent coming round the mountain and we’ll get to them, sure enough … in 2015.)

Notable Edibles #13: Baguio Dairy Farm a.k.a. Baguio Stock Farm Milk and Yoghurt

Baguio Dairy Farm aka Baguio Stock FarmBack down the mountain to a place Maam C recommended … and because the ice cream at their home stay was to die for. ^^,

Enter! =)

Where the milk is tasty creamy; and the yougurt is thick, just the right kind of sour, and surely, it isn’t packed with sugar.  The cheese reminded me of feta although it didn’t taste like anything to me. I would have to consult with my cook/baker friends about what to do with the little blocks I got. *harhar

Baguio Dairy Farm aka Baguio Stock Farm products fresh milk cheese and yogurt

Fresh milk, yoghurt and cheese *nomnomnom

With the cows being milked twice a day, at 4:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., you’re sure to get the freshest dairy product you could ever wish for.  They’re open as early as 7:00 a.m. and close as late as 7:00 p.m. so it’s easy to stock your fridge up with yoghurt of various flavors (strawberry, blueberry, mango, pandan, melon, plain), milk and cheese … after a nice sightseeing excursion. Super nice and friendly receptionist as well; thank you so much, Maam. \m/

Around the dairy farm … looking for the cows. (They’re out pasturing … further away, we didn’t see them.)

The milk from this Mountain High Dairy might just be the only milk I’ll drink from now on … and with gusto, too.

(The yogurt served at Cafe in the Sky is from here … naturally. *hihi)

UPDATE 05/23/2019:  Mountain High Dairy Cooperative can now deliver the freshest cow’s milk (pasteurized or raw), white cheese (classic kesong puti), and yogurt (plain and flavored) to you. P1,000 minimum order. Call or text: 09156213531 – Globe, 09198494948 – Smart

That concludes this post on another great food adventure.

Soooo, have you booked your Christmas buffet at the Chalet yet? I have.  Excited! Wee!

Once again, Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to you all, my foodie friends!  See you, next year (for realsies, this time … unless I find something else that would make me feel like I’d explode if I didn’t tell you about it pronto. *heeharhar)

Happy Holidays to you! I think I should visit Cafe in the Sky before the year ends. 🙂

  4. Nickie says :

Hi Xine. I inquired from Cafe in the Sky about the rates of their bed and breakfast. The one in your post is the house of the owner daw hehe No final rates for the B&B yet but they said it’s going to be under the restaurant. 😉

    • XiNE says :

Hey there, Nickie! Oh, thanks much! Will make the correction. I did see that construction going on downstairs, wide windows facing Baguio. That’s the B&B, fun! (“,)

  5. XiNE says :

Hello there, Shayne Zalameda! Thank you so much! Happy holidays! (“,)

  6. Lea says :

Hi, we r on our way up to Baguio as I write this (a good 180 kms more to go)..we want to have brunch at cafe in the sky. Question- is this accessible by car or will there be a hike up as well? Btw, I love your pictures with the clouds! Hoping we can have the same shots today:)

  7. Anonymous says :

Amazing photos with the clouds, Xine. 😉

    • XiNE says :

Thank you very much! I was thrilled to have that shot too. *hihi A blessed Sunday to you. I hope you’re having a fine time in the Baguio food quest! (“,)

Hi!! How to go to cafe from baguio gamit ang public transpo? Is it walking distance na rin frim cafe to la presa?

    • XiNE says :

Hello there! By taxi is so far the easiest way to get to Cafe in the Sky. (The huge jeeps going to Sto. Tomas take a while to get filled =b) Yes, La Presa is near, about 500 meters, i’m guessing, but it’s walk-able. Happy new year, fellow eatsplorer! (“,)

      • Anonymous says :

        Hows the ride going there?

        • XiNE says :

Hello! Long but scenic, winding but smooth and you can feel the temperature dropping as you go higher in altitude. *tee hee

If how to get there is what you’re asking, please see previous comments. Thanks for visiting the blog. (“,)

  9. KC says :

Hi XiNE, at what time did you take that photo with caption “taking a walk … and hanging out in the clouds at the Cafe in the Sky”? thanks!

  10. Marie says :

If you patronize the Cafe in the Sky, you are in violation of the Supreme Court ruling last September 30, 2014, the Writ of Kalikasan.

    • XiNE says :

Hello there. Ummm, okay. Thanks for the heads up. (“,)

    • Race says :

I don’t understand what your point is by commenting that, Marie. I didn’t see any law enforcers guarding the gate telling us that we would go to jail if we go in and eat there.

  11. Jon Conso says :

hello 🙂 you said in one of your comments that going there in taxi is possible, how much is the fare you think? will it cost by more than 200? and is there a taxi also going back to town proper of Baguio?

thank you Xine and more power to you and your blog 🙂

    • XiNE says :

Hello there, Jon! There’s a stark contrast from traffic flow the day of the writing of this post to today, lots of cars and FX taxis coming and going.

Just ask the taxi driver first if they’d like to take you up to Sto. Tomas. Our estimate would be that it would cost around P130 to go up the mountain from Cathedral depending on how heavy the traffic is.

Please be careful though, I’ve recently heard stories about some unscrupulous people overcharging for the ride. That said, I hope you enjoy your time at Cafe in the Sky/Sitio Pungayan! Thank you for visiting the blog! (“,)

Hi! Awesome pics! Mga what time po yung nung nag papic kayo na may mga clouds sa cafe in the sky? Kasi we’re thinking of sa early morning kaso malamang walang clouds nun.

    Hope you can reply po!

    Thanks!

    • XiNE says :

We’re also planning to go to Cafe in the Sky. Tanong ko lang po kung what time kayo nagpapicture dun na may clouds. Kasi baka kugn super early like 7AM eh walang kaulap-ulap eh. hehehe.

Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!

  14. aries says :

hai, ill be there on this coming dec. ur suggestion, what time would be nice for sight seeing and relax? is it nice for dinner?

    • XiNE says :

Hello there, aries. Sightseeing in Sto. Tomas is the prettiest I think early morning and midday when the clouds are just rolling in. They sometimes get too thick in the afternoon that there’s nothing to see but white.

If it’s a clear night, a Cafe in the Sky dinner would be nice as you can see the lights from Baguio City in the distance that looks almost like a system of constellations, or even a really small galaxy *hihi.

I hope this helps. I hope you enjoy your time at Cafe in the Sky and Sto. Tomas! (“,)

  15. Irah Kristine Valguna says :

Hello! We’ll be visiting Baguio this coming 26th. Would you happen to have any contact numbers from the dairy farm? And do they allow interviews? Because my classmates and I are required to go on a dairy farm visit at school. Thank you very much! Happy Christmas!

    • XiNE says :

Hello there, Irah Kristine Valguna! There are landline numbers for the Office of the Regional Director on the photo of the entrance to the Baguio Dairy Farm on the blogpost. Looking at my archives for the stuff we bought from there, they have this number: (074) 426 1184 for it (a.k.a Baguio Stock Farm/ Mountain High Dairy Cooperative) I hope this helps. I hope you’re having a fantastic Christmas week! Happy Baguio (food) adventures! (“,)

It’s so much fun to read your blog. Great, You been updating 👏👏 .may I add a few tips or info to fellow travelers who would want to go there. As per dec26, 2015,we have been there. Commute lng jeep fare at 25php @ (asks the locals where is the terminal) otherwise it is located here (Abanao St. Just down from City Hall and Rizal park.) it’s a 40minute ride.road is OK. Tell the driver to drop U at The cafe. U know locals are kind if u talk to them right.

We were there like 1:30 the weather is perfect. I suggest u to be early. In the afternoon u hardly get a ride going back to the city. We walk down like an hour and then some kind residents hitch us in there car. We stop by at the police station, checkpoint it is,.there are jeeps here going to the city. As we waited, several tourists with private cars And even rented taxis are Stopped and sent back. There is a city ordinance for the closure of LA presa. I read it also in Midland courier and seen on local tv
.the police are saying the cafe is closed too. They were telling those who booked earlier are only allowed. In my mind how come we aren’t sent back? This is a tip. Ride a jeep😄😅😃 .

    • XiNE says :

Hello there, Ala! Thank you so much for the additional info. The feedback that you have reading this blog is much appreciated as well. Thank you! \m/

I did hear that riding a jeep to get to Cafe in the Sky is the best way today. Lots of hullabaloo over this Writ and with some people spreading news that the cafe is closed. Made me wonder why it’s included when it’s mainly offering a resto service in a great spot for a fantastic view. Nothing destructive there. (Might want to get some kind of pre-registration like they do for Palawan’s Underground River to keep the number of people up the mountain in check *hihi for traffic’s sake and for the residents’ too.)

I’m glad you got to hang out at Cafe in the Sky and that you had a little adventure going down the mountain as well. More great memories and prosperity in 2016 to you and your family! (“,)

Hello, I saw your post and they’re amazing! after checking, I’ve decided to visit Cafe in the Sky this coming May 7th. Um just wanna ask how to get there after dropping from Victory liner station in Baguio. Thank you in advance!! 🙂

    • XiNE says :

Hello, Sheila May! Getting to Cafe in the Sky is a little bit tricky now with DENR stopping (some) people from going up the mountain. Please do make a reservation with the cafe so that they have a heads up that you’re coming on May 7th.

I tried to attach Google map links for directions, but for some reason, it’s not attaching properly here so I sent a message to your email. I hope all the info I put in there helps. I wish you success with your May 7th plan and that you have a great experience at Cafe in the Sky! (“,)

    • XiNE says :

Hello there, Phine! I wouldn’t really know since I’m not a doctor but if you’re asking about the condition of the road going up there, it’s all nice and cemented.

I hope you succeed going to Cafe in the Sky (even with the Writ of Kalikasan thing and the whether-whether situation on that) as well as have a great time there should you decide to push on (with or without your pregnant friend). (“,)

Hello! Sy here! My colleagues are planning to go to cafe in the sky this coming september 3, 2017. Do we still need to ask for reservation? we just gonna dine there for breakfast. Is there any issues still with regards the Writ of Kalikasan thingy? Thank you!

Hello, Sy! You might want to secure a reservation with Cafe in the Sky just to be sure. Hope this helps. Happy Baguio exploring and eatsploring in September!

Hi! I am so thrilled reading your blog, now im so excited to go there. Your blog is so helpful, thank you for mentioning there is a jeepney ride going there. One question though, how much is the transfo fare of the jeepney going to cafe in the sky? And will there be any jeepneys available anytime going back to baguio proper? I hope you can answer my queries the soonest. Since my plan is to visit there on Sunday, September 17. Thank you so much kn advancr. God bless.

Hello there, Katherine Alon! Apologies for the late reply. I haven’t been to Cafe in the Sky recently but I am rooting for you to get to see and experience it there. Based on one of the comments here from Ala, fare is P25. (Do look for that comment on the thread. A 2016 comment, I think that was.)

Jeeps are a bit scarce going down to the checkpoint but I think it would be a good ‘little’ walk. From the checkpoint, taxis and jeeps abound. I hope this helps. I wish you success in this endeavor. Happy Baguio vacay! (“,)

2/3/19 We went all the way up to the end of the road. At the check point, the guard would not let us go through. However, we were able to talk him to let us go through. I am not sure why after a few conversation, he finally relented to let us drive through. His is last word was “sigue na nga , senior po pala kayo. Huwag lang po kayong magtatagal”. There were four of us and we are all senior. There are many damage areas of the road, which made it dangerous. It was a comfortable for a slow drive – ideal for sight seeing – because we were alone on the road. As for the inn, We did not see any sign of it because we were not looking for it.

In 1953, I was there. What I remember is a large building which could be a restaurant or hotel with a beautiful garden of many milflores flowering shrubs. The awesome sight of the provinces of Pangasinan and La union and the sea. Can any one can confirm of the existence of the resort? That was many years ago and I was in my teens.

Hello, arnel sansano! I’m glad that you got to drive through … and enjoy the long winding road up Sto. Tomas. (Sad to hear there are damaged areas when just a couple years ago, it was nice and newly cemented.)

Thank you for sharing your experience with the sights in 1953. I haven’t heard of that resort/resto/hotel but recently, just yesterday, I heard there’s a structure, mala Diplomat, thereabouts. So exciting!

I hope you enjoyed your vacation in Baguio! Thanks for visiting the blog. Happy food adventures! (“,)
