Somtam Thai Resto: Som Tam and the Best of Thai Cuisine
I’ll try to make this short and sweet, guys, because I’m not feeling well. (Fingers crossed, this is not the one time, big time sick for 2019 or ever. *hee)
Well, savory. Savory is more like it when we’re talking about Thai cuisine. Let’s see, a short and savory feature.
A couple months back, artist Sil was painting a mural again. He said it was for an up and coming restaurant. Told us, too, that he’d inform us as soon as they opened, but he did us one better when he got us in to the place for its first day of operations. (Thank you so much, Sil! Couldn’t insert our photo here though. Darn dead hard drive. =S) So happy to be reunited with my Thai food favorites … and well made dishes at that. (Nice one, Chef!)
There were a number of selections on their opening day menu and of course, we went for the resto’s namesake: Som tam.=D Fabulous textures of the ingredients plus zingy flavored dressing. Oh man, neither Race nor Sil (who was an initiate to dishes from Thailand) could keep me from sipping every drop of that dressing.
Race and I wouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to get tom yum. A nicely flavored soup with the minute spice of chili getting caught in our throats. Gave my lungs a good jolt of a cough there. =b Even just the soup, makes me happy.
We were served green mango salad with crispy fish, pad Thai noodles, and curry as well. (All of which we ordered again when I finally returned with my foodie posse, Ate Beth and Karla.) At our first Somtam visit, washed this grand opening lunch down with refreshing tamarind iced tea and lemon grass pandan. =)
As soon as X+1 got home, I told my foodie lovies and you, my foodie friends on Facebook and a quick mention on a menu post. P3 complete yesterday, (Yes, OA rain day. Glad for it, because yey, flushing water! =)) But gosh, the timing. Just when we were about to set out, down it all came.) everyone was ecstatic to be having Thai foodstuff in food trip city, Baguio City, again.
Anyway, we’ve arrived and our first order without asking for consensus was the yum pla duk foo … with more of that zingy sauce. One dish, sour, sweet, salty, spicy with fun shredded catfish crisps, we can eat this all day. ^^,
To sooth our palates, we had Thai milk tea. (Who knew there was a green version too. How pretty.) Only to set it a-tingling once again with chicken tom yum. Perfect time for it, if you ask me. In just a split second, our tummies were warmed. *contented sigh
Like the kitchen suddenly went on fast forward, our other orders then came out one after the other. We went with the pad Thai before everything else so we could taste every facet of it. My, my, that fried egg topping (looked like tangled brown mongo sprouts) was an interesting feeling in the gob. Shrimp peeled and de-veined, all we had to do was shove the fork into our mouths. Wee! Flavor not intense enough for you? Check out the condiments beside the plate; sugar, fish sauce, chili powder, and vinegar with chili slices.
A pitcher of house blend tamarind iced tea
As luscious the flavor profile of our dinner spread is, we needed more libations to calm our taste buds. Tamarind tea to the rescue.
Bagoong rice, is not just rice fried in shrimp paste at Somtam Thai Resto. It had many other toppings, it could be a meal all on its own. I thought back to a month ago, how Sil, Race and I went with plain rice to pair with our green curry order. *hihi #FoodieHacks
Khao kluk kapi – bagoong rice \m/
It might look like it’s in a small container but how this curry went a long, long, long, looooong way. So creamy rich and spicy good. It might have been raining cats and dogs outside but we were warm and toasty with this viand. (“,)
Just when we thought our wonder meal was over, Chef sent in sticky rice with ripe mango. We were so full already from the powwow dinner, it took some effort on our part to down this … that is, after a spoonful. The perfect mango, fun popping pinipig, the rice, and every drop of the coconut milk sauce didn’t stand a chance. Clean plate! \m/
X marks Somtam Thai Resto for good food in Baguio. Serving more than som tam, but all of the best that Thailand has to offer. ❤
Price: Nothing priced more than P300, sweeeet … and savory for our pockets, too!
