Beyond Alcoholic Beverages and Shots, Is There Anything Else from Baguio Bars and Restos?

I don’t drink. (“,)

That being established, it doesn’t necessarily mean that bars don’t have anything to offer a foodie like me.  For one thing, I like eating pulutan/finger foods.  *yumyum (Much to my drinker friends’ chagrin *hihi  Thanks for feeding me you, guys! ^^,)  Another thing, there are a number of establishments in the city that double up as restaurants (and have succeeded \m/).  Here are the drinking places on my list (that I thought offered the prospect of good food/meals):

1.)    Dugout Sports Bar

2.)    The Gallery

3.)    Concoctions

4.)    Eat Avenue/Shot Circuit

5.)    Kalye Luna

Dugout Sports Bar

Dug Out is a sports bar that opens at 3:00 in the afternoon.  Race and I got mushroom cracklings, red sox seafood pasta, and tofu bean cakes from here.  I love their tofu bean cakes (although they’re more cubes than cakes really, teenie tiny flavorful tofu cubes (“,)).

If you’re planning on eating heartily, you might want to get your food from somewhere else first.

The Gallery Cafe (sure, you are) and Restauran

Race and I went to the Gallery as part of a binging fest to cross off a number of places on my Baguio resto list at one time.  They were open as early as 10 a.m. and they had a ton of stuff to offer (breakfast meals, rice meals, pasta, etc.  Weeee!)  The only stuff we could fit in our tummies after eating elsewhere was the buffalo wings, graham cake and rootbeer float.

The buffalo wings look kind of dry but they were very tasty – flavorful to the bone minus the sticky icky fingers.  \m/  We’ll have to come back here again when we haven’t eaten at other places so we could try the heavier stuff on the menu.  (Also, they have a new fusion menu that I’d love to sample.)

Concoctions Bar and Resto

I’ve always been curious about what it looks like inside a particular section of Casa Generosa.  Concoctions Bar and Resto gave me the best excuse for a look-see.  Looking at their details on their Facebook page, I saw that they had meals to offer besides shots.  I was so ecstatic.  It also said in an album of their food offering that they open at 11 a.m. every day.  (I went through all those photos which made me hungry with every click.  Oh, man!)

Concoctions scene and drinks

Drowning myself in Italian soda …mango shake photo bomb =))

We got there at 5ish (afternoon, just to be clear) and sad to say, I didn’t get to satisfy my hunger there.  Their kitchen wasn’t open yet, the lady manning the bar said.  So you could say that everything (oh you, delectable looking meals in FB photos) wasn’t available.  All wasn’t lost, however, because Race got to try their best seller, the baby back ribs (which we had to wait a long time for *bleh).  I, on the other hand, took solace in their Italian soda selection (trying to entertain myself with the nice colors of the drink) but it didn’t help.  Plain and simple, I was disappointed (and super hungry argh!).

Service:  1 treasure chest because the kitchen was closed even when we were there way into their hours of operation.

Shot Circuit Shooter and Cocktail Bar

The first time we took the trip to Shot Circuit a.k.a. Eat Avenue, the street bar was still closed.  (I say going to Shot Circuit is like taking a trip because the establishment is found in the outskirts of the city.)  We lingered in the vicinity thinking they would open since their Facebook page said their business hours are from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m.  We didn’t get anywhere that day and we had to settle for one of my favorites – one of the more reliable restaurants to get some food.  (Always a winner! =D)

Before we took the trip for our next visit, I sent the owner a message asking if they were open.  When they said they were, Race and I found ourselves riding down Marcos Highway to try Shot Circuit’s Mexican food offering.   We got the quesadilla, huevos rancheros, beef and bean burritos, and the Hawaiian loco moco steak.

Shot Circuit menu and food

Loved their quesadilla – savory … so were the beef and bean burritos. \m/ Huevos rancheros – interesting. The Hawaiian loco moco steak didn’t really look like the one on the menu but it was okay. (“,)

We didn’t have any drinks then because the master drink mixer who was also the owner, went out to buy essentials for his bar.  The attendant who took care of us said, this hole-in-the-wall bar opens for business at 7 p.m.  (Oh, I see.  Noted =D)  We decided that we’d just come for another visit to try the shakes and other nonalcoholic beverages.

This is what a street bar looks like. =D  Hold on to your hair and nurse your drink in the  typhoon season! *heeharhar

Overall, the food was great – delicious, filling and also, (the best thing about it) easy on the pocket.  There was some stuff that wasn’t available but then we’ll just get those when we come back again.  Note to self: Go past 7 p.m. =b

Kalye Luna Art Bar and Restaurant

Seeing one of Kalye Luna’s desserts on foodspotting.com, I decided to give this art bar a try (against Race’s advice, after having so many disappointing experiences in bars).  Checking this establishment’s Facebook page, I found that they also offered other stuff to eat.  (Goodie.)  When we got there, however, many of the things we wanted (including the fried ice cream that I thought was so enticing) weren’t available.  We settled for their pork sisig (that’s missing an egg *teehee) and their camaron rebosado which was a filling enough meal.  However, i wasn’t really impressed.  (I’m doing the Mykayla Maroney face now.)

And the answer to the title question is yes (from certain establishments).  X marks Dug Out, The Gallery, and Eat Avenue/Shot Circuit for good food in Baguio.  Although they’re mainly bars, they still bring it for the people who want the good stuff, the filling stuff.  Thank you so much for your effort, guys!  (“,)

Hi there. What do you mean by having 2 treasure chests sa price? Does it mean it’s cheaper than having 3 treasure chests? ‘Cause it can also mean, 2 means it’s more expensive than having 3. Right? So which is which? Thanks. 🙂

    • XiNE says :

Hello, Stephanie. The more the treasure chests the cheaper the food is from a particular restaurant. So you’re right, two treasure chests is more expensive than three. (“,) We could say a successful Baguio food quest would earn 20 treasure chests total. Thanks for reading my blog! Have a great weekend!

Passing by General Luna Road, I saw that what used to be Kalye Luna is now the Yellow Submarine. Will check out what they have (again). (“,)

    Hi Xine,

I came across your blog as i was surfing through the net for articles related to Concoctions Bar and Resto. I have read your blog about Concoctions a few days back. It was unfortunate that our kitchen was closed (at 5PM) on the day that you visited.

Curious, I checked on our staff attendance logs for the past six months and found out that: 1) there were two days that our kitchen staff (on duty at 5pm) was MIA due to a) an illness and b) a family emergency. Our kitchen opened real late during those days.

Also, three times in the past six months our kitchen could only operate for, roughly, half of our daily operating hours on account of fumigation and a gas pipeline repair (which had to be done twice).

We used to open at 11AM, but that was a tad short of a year ago. We now open from 1PM to 5AM, with kitchen availability from 2PM-2AM (our last call–for kitchen orders, is at 1AM, 2AM on very busy days–usually on the weekends).

If you happened to have visited us during those times that our kitchen was unavailable due to the reasons I have stated earlier, then we apologize. Although, I must say that it doesn’t happen often, we can assure everyone that.

Our current bestsellers include: Concoctions’ fried chicken (regular and spicy variant), beef tapa, tokwa’t baboy, sizzling pork sisig, chicken gizzard, chili-garlic prawns, sizzling squid, fat finger cheese sticks. chili cheese sticks and onion rings. We revise / tweak our menu about twice annually.

This is our tell of the tale. We do not mean to make excuses for ourselves. We couldn’t function fully when you walked in. And that in itself, for whatever reason, is error on our part. I am hopeful that you can understand that, simply, things like that happen.

You’re very welcome to visit us again. I am hopeful that you don’t just write us off as some place unworthy of checking out, or giving the impression thereof. I’d like to think that we (everyone on your list, whether your review was positive or otherwise) deserve a second look. I would go with It takes, at least, more than a single visit to create more than a mere impression and to justify a credible recommendation. Just my thoughts.

    Thank you so much!

    Sincerely,
