Beggang, A Firestarter for A Foodie’s Appetite

Beggang.  What an appropriate name for a Baguio food establishment that has fired up Beth’s appetite and mine!  If you ask them, however, they might reply to you with Billy Joel’s song going ‘we didn’t start the fire, it was always burning…’ *hihi

They didn’t start the fire… \m/

It was Karla who pointed this restaurant out to me.  She told me that they had many delicious dishes to offer; kare-kare, garlic tuna, caldereta, binagoongan, everything!  I remember this place well as the only piece of shade to run for when the rain started to pour when my elementary/high school friends and I were out skating.  (Well, there’s the gazebo in the middle of the skating rink before too, but it made more sense to run for the counter just in case the rain didn’t let up so we could return our skates in time. =b) Shout out to Jaey, Sigrid, Mary Jane, Darwin and all my skating buddies!  (“,) Eeiii, I remember skating in a line with you guys, so exciting!  \m/  It piqued my interest that one could get good food from this exact place today.

UPDATE 01/06/2014: New Beggang menu here.

While my first plan to eat at Beggang was foiled by drinking too much tea =)), I didn’t have to wait long to pay this restaurant an actual visit.  Beth was my partner in crime (committing arson? =b) the next day.  As we walked into the restogrill, I was amazed at the space the establishment had.  (It didn’t look that immense before with shelves of roller skates and inline skates against every wall.)  Beth and I decided to go with Karla’s first recommendation, kare-kare.  Before the attendant came to take our order, however, I noticed ensaladang pipino.  (I could smell the vinegar it was going to be dressed with already…you know it, Beth could, too.  =D)  For drinks, we got more vinegar… err, fruit shakes.  *harhar

While waiting for our orders, our attendant directed our attention to the refrigerator full of desserts cooling inside.  We decided to play it safe, putting the cakes off until we ate the main course.  Meanwhile, we also had our eye on the little bottle of vinegar in the middle of our table.  ^^,  The cucumber salad came and Beggang started setting our appetites on fire.  For a simple dish put together, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ensaladang pipino…come to us zingy vinegar! =D

A few minutes later, a bowl of kare-kare was brought to our table.  As big as the bowl already was, the kare-kare sauce still spilled over the brim because it was such a huge helping.  There were lots of veggies in it.  (Lots of banana heart strips I like so much, oh yeah!)  The meat was tender and flavorful.  Eating kare-kare without the shrimp paste, it was tasty sweet.  Together, weee!  (“,)

Overflowing kare-kare and (the ‘smoothest’) shrimp paste (I’ve ever had) (“,)

And so we had a nice and filling Beggang dinner.  X marks Beggang Resto Grill for good food in Baguio.  They’ve lit my appetite on fire (even further, whoa!).  The fire’s spread and I have no intention of putting it out.

P2…missing 1 at Beggang Resto Grill =))

Food:  4 treasure chests And we’re coming back for the garlic tuna, caldereta, binagoongan, everything!  (The cakes, too. We began water retaining after the vinegar from the ensalada.)  Karla, get ready. *hihi

Service: 4 treasure chests Attentive staff, way to go, guys! Thanks for packing our leftover kare-kare with more shrimp paste, too! (“,)

Ambiance: 3 treasure chests

Price: 4 treasure chests  I’m still amazed at the serving proportion of the food (and the shrimp paste – we usually had to use this sparingly to ensure every spoonful of karekare had some.  At Beggang, no need, yey!).  We had so much left over, my furry companions and I had kare-kare for lunch the next day.
