UPDATE: Sweetmates (It’s All about Cream Puffs)
Cream puffs … I remember the first time I tried some. My sister brought some home from … err, that source, escapes me. *hihi But from that moment, profiteroles were one of the go to baked goodies that we bought from various bakeries.
I’ve tried regular cream puffs, cream puffs that are not so puffy (but tasty nonetheless), dry cream puffs, good cream puffs, cream puffs that are true to their name – full of cream, etc. =D
It seems we got over the choux à la crème craze and it was not until we took a bite of Sweetmates‘ cream puffs that our taste for this was reawakened. (“,)
The Anatomy of A Good Cream Puff
So what makes a good cream puff?
1.) The Successful Reinvention of the Wheel:
So many cream puffs in the city/world, so little time. That’s what I found out trying the varieties that bakeries in the city had to offer. Sweetmates did everything right by making theirs stand out from the crowd. Fabulously surprising, dah-ling, fabulous! =)
They offer a wide selection of flavors for their choux à la crème; caramel, chocolate, cookies and creme, raspberry, almond cream cheese, to name a few of them.

(It’s so big, it can rightly be referred to as a cream boom. *heeharhar)
With a good sized profiterole like this, there will be more scrumptious bites for one. (Or you can share it with someone you’re sweet on. *giggles) Me, I prefer it to be “Mine, all MINE!” *maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh
The way that Sweetmates bakes this will sit well with a lot of people. The eclair shell is densely packed (just the way Race likes bread and dessert) but nicely moist (my preference). Even when you get a bit of it without the topping or the cream, it holds its own. (It’s so good, you’ll be running your teeth on the paper liner on the bottoms of these puffs, too. =b)
4. The Cream in the Puff:
Mmm, caramel-y! (for the caramel flavored one, obviously … which is my favorite so far, although I still have to sample raspberry, almond cheese cake, and choco hazelnut. =D) A perfectly prepared custard that’s milky sweet without a hint of egg ‘lansa‘. Oh joy!
For the other two types of fillings, they make for a true blue cream puff. You want chocolate, you’ve got chocolate. You want cookies and creme, you’ve got cookies and creme. Oohh-reo. *contented sighs
Finger-licking good. (Or should I say, baking cup scraping good.)
