Chow Down at Sumo Sam
Are you ready for an eating bout with Sumo Sam? (Supposedly, it’s a wrestling bout but you’re not going to read about anything strenuous in this blog because I’m not going to do any such activity either =b)
If you’re not prepared, regular sumo wrestling matches will allot four minutes to hours worth of preparation time before the gyoji says “mattanashi kamaete’/time’s up, prepare yourselves (for the actual bout).
While sumo wrestlers parade around the ring, clap, stomp around, throw salt this way and that, and glare intimidatingly at their opponents, you can prepare for your Sumo Sam meal any way you like. In my case and Race’s, we just happened to be at CJH Technohub when we saw that Sumo Sam was in the soft opening phase.
For this somewhat small restaurant of Sumo Sam’s, there are a few more tables to the side, behind the wall where I had a fine time looking at the illuminated ‘posters’ mounted on the mirrored surface. (That is, until my eyes became strained with the brightness so I just had to turn way *hihi).
I was at the height of my seafood cravings so I got myself a plate of bacon dory. Race, on the other hand, picked the sesame chicken dish from the Mt. Fuji noodles selection. When our orders arrived, I was surprised to see that mine was like hors d’oeuvres of fish in a pig belly blanket. =)) It was a good thing I didn’t get anything else though because Race’s choice was big plate of ultra savory, ultra salty noodles. (Err, our sumo friends really made good on their salt sprinkling purification and protection ritual eh? *snickers) We had to get a few cups of plain rice so we could eat the noodles a la viand (one noodle went a long way with the rice, whoa).
For drinks, we just got glasses of water. Between the dory and the sesame chicken, the flavors of the dishes threw Race and me right out of the (imaginary) dohyo/ring. That’s one point for Sumo Sam but I still thought about coming back another time for the dynamite roll and any one of the SumoSam green thumb selections. Moo!
The Grand Opening of Sumo Sam (April 5, 2013)
A month passed and Race and I were back with the Baguio Bloggers for the grand opening of Sumo Sam. (Thank you so much for the invite, Sumo Sam. Thank you, Baguio Bloggers (Sir Vince), for letting us tag along! (“,))
Here are a few of the Sumo Sam grand opening highlights:
Oh yeah! Maki/rolls (California, crunchy tuna and a regular sized dynamite), gyouza, chicken teriyaki, ebi tempura, salmon and tuna sashimi cubes(?), beef misono, green iced tea (*sip ahhh, love this),a closer look at the maki, fresh fruits for dessert, more dynamite maki, seafood yakisoba and cucumbers carved with ‘Sumo Sam’. (“,)
I piled all of that on my plate… but not the carved cucumbers – that’s just decor. =b Oh and yes, they had delicious Japanese fried rice. It’s rice that you could eat all on its own and you’d be satisfied. TIP: Use their soy sauce sparingly …for the gyouza or the rolls (a few drops would be just right) because yes, that’s what got salted on to the extreme for this visit. Other than the sauce, the grand opening buffet spread of Sumo Sam best sellers was satisfying. (Another oh, I see moment as to why these are their best.^^,)

X marks Sumo Sam for good food in Baguio. If you’re looking for a Japanese spread that’s big on taste, there’s no one better to give that to you than Sumo Sam. Mattanashi kamaete!!!
Service: For our first visit, I’m giving for our male attendant and for our female attendant who was a little lost – maybe it’s because she was done with her duty for the day (her hair was all over her face … untied I mean =b), I’m not sure. Anyhoo, she’s going to get a lot of experience pretty soon with Sumo Sam officially opened. (“,)
