Notable Edibles #12 – Mamang’s Native Lechon
Over extended vacay there. *hihi
Hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi, my foodie friends.
Since 2009 (or 10 … thereabouts *hee), every time Panagbenga rolls in, there’s always one dish that I look forward to at Session Road in Bloom. No- it’s not shawarma … oh, all right, Amirah‘s slow cooker ground pork version made it for their zingy garlic sauce =b (it even inspired me to make my own with ‘live’/not-burnt-away-in-the-roasting garlic flavors).
The dish I’m talking about for real, however, is notable edible #12:
Lechon Paksiw from Mamang’s
I wouldn’t have roast pig that didn’t come straight from the spit, any other way. \m/ For a couple of months, the source was Brandon’s, a carinderia way past its glory days when we finally found their main/nonflower festival branch. When they closed down, I was at a loss of where to get this fabulous viand …
Until Mamang’s Native Lechon Co. set a booth up at Porta Vaga’s roofdeck. Stewing for hours (probably the whole day while supplies last, yeh!), pounded with spices, springy but gives way without the least bit of resistance consistency of the crispy-for-a-split-second skin, lean – some shredded and disintegrating in the sauce in its tenderness, awesome-AWESOME taste; it’s a wondrous and heavenly dish. =D
Although the lechon depot has many other selections (as well as unadulterated roasted pig, naturally) like lechon binagoongan, lechon sisig, monggo with lechon, and even lechon pizza, the stewed in vinegar style is my favorite. You can get it (and the other viands *click on first photo for enlarged view of menu) as a meal pack with rice and eat it at the tables beside the Mamang booth or for a good for three sized takeout order. Oh, joy. (“,)
Details on the takeaway box:
Mamang’s Native Lechon, Co.
Roofdeck Porta Vaga Mall (in front of Mountain Grown Natural Foods Store)
Session Road, Baguio City
UPDATE 04/26/2015: Couldn’t find them at Porta Vaga rooftop no more and heard from the guard there that they moved to SM. Will be back with specifics once I do see them at one of my errand runs at that mall. =D
UPDATE 04/13/2016: AHA! There you are, Mamang’s! Found at SM SaveMore Km. 4, Pico, La Trinidad.
UPDATE 12/2017: Gone from La Trinidad, and back to Porta Vaga rooftop. *tee hee

Mystery of where Mamang’s Lechonan went: SOLVED! It’s one of the stores to SM Savemore La Trinidad’s side. Yippie!
