Jewel (of A Meal) in the (Korean) Palace
What could be better than a meal of samgyeopsal? (My old Korean students must be thinking of their favorite dishes, right now. Shout outs to you, kiddos – who are not so kiddie anymore! (“,))
The answer: An eat all you can meal of samgyeopsal!
Grilled buffet!!!
Meats (pork belly, marinated pork and beef strips) for grilling =D
At Korean Palace (or Kung Jeon or Koreano Palasyo =D – says so on the sign facing the road coming to South Drive), they not only serve samgyeopsal but also a buffet of grilled meats. So more than pork cuts, they also provide marinated pork and US beef belly – all for P350/person.

After much preparation (fasting for a few hours =b), Race and I headed to the Korean Palace to give their grilled buffet a try. Walking into the establishment, we were met with a feast. I have never seen such a large display (or large containers full) of side dishes, pajori, meats and ssamjang. (It seems that the owner of Korean Palace also had a great collection of tongs, scissors and saucers of every shape and size – everything you need for an honest to goodness Korean meal. )

Our attendant(s) let us get started. I made sure we had everything on our table and Race went on grilling duty. Before all the meats were cooked, we already had mouthfuls of side dishes (marble potatoes with a generous sprinkling of sesame seeds, just the right tang for the kimchi, juicy radish cubes), pajori (sweeter than Wood Nymph’s version), and salad (with red-skinned radish and violet cabbage and a tasty – and pretty dressing – it had a purple/pinkish tinge to it).
Even while there’s sangchu/lettuce, pajori, and veggie based side dishes, Korean Palace still prepared (a colorful) salad (with pretty and tasty purplish/pinkish dressing.) Yum!
With the meat perfectly grilled, away we went with wrapping these pieces in leaves of romaine lettuce. I still like the original samgyeopsal better – samgyeopsal gui. Must be due to the cold weather that the oils on the beef strips hardened quickly. The marinated pork was Race’s bet. ^^, The marinade seeped into the meat nicely where you wouldn’t need to put much ssamjang (Korean Palace’s is a bit runny but don’t let that fool you, it’s still flavorful) in your ‘wraps’.

I went a little crazy putting stuff on our plates, forgetting that there was a ‘no leftover policy’ in place. It’s a P500 charge for leftovers. Our fasting paid off, however, because we didn’t leave a morsel when our meal ended. As you would guess, we were then exceptionally sated. (We had to walk it off – South Drive to home. I’m so glad Baguio is a wonderful place to go walking. Oh yeah! \m/)

Korean Palace also has offerings a la carte. Our regular orders are kimbap and bibimbap (Can’t go wrong with these (“,)). Don’t forget the banchan!

He carried himself so regally, I had an image of how the maitre d’s at fancy restaurants (in other countries) would carry themselves – regal but not snooty, alrightie; there is a difference. ***They’ve got some beautiful traditional Korean costumes hanging by the door that you can wear for a photo op after (or before) your meal, too. I wanted to get into one but then, it crossed my mind, the photo would totally rock with more people (in costume) in it. =D So I’ll be back with my foodie posse. *hee

Hello damian.verdin! As I recall when we called them to make a reservation (446-7557) and asked about the buffet time, they just told us to come anytime. I think 11:00 a.m. would be a safe bet and that buffet would go on for the whole day.
Take note, it’s a weekend buffet so schedule your visit for Friday, Saturday or Sunday so you can eat your fill. *hihi
The meats they have for grilled buffet are pork belly (traditional samgyeopsal), US beef belly strips and marinated pork.

Hello there! I think it’s safer to make a reservation although when we went there and gave them a call beforehand, they just told us to come. You might like to consider the day you plan to go, there might be lots of people if you come at Panagbenga season/holiday season, etc. Just so they get a heads up and you get a heads up. *hihi

Hello can i ask if you can pay only one per head for example you will only pay for just one person. And you will eat in a group of three for sharing purposes because you can not finish it all.
Hello there, Aileen! I haven’t been to Korean Palace in a while, but the price for buffet (P399 now) is really per head. You just get what you can finish (also because there’s a leftover charge).
