Elements: A New Constituent to Breakfast in Baguio
They weren’t kidding when they said they were building a new town.
When Beth told me she got word that another restaurant has opened in Newtown Plaza (thankies, ate!) and that its offering was buffets, I suddenly got to thinking about the last time I was at Rasa Pura. There was only a skeleton of a building there then and if it’s true that the hotel’s already up and running, I would be mighty impressed.
I didn’t know it could be done but Newtown Plaza Hotel lost no time in getting to business. Dining places today, accommodation in a couple of months (the hotel officially opens in December), and who knows what else later.
It’s been a long time since I’ve done this … woken up early to stuff myself silly with breakfast eats. =b Race and I were a bit late to the party and getting to the resto (after feeling like one of the construction workers clocking in *hihi You’ll see why later), we saw that the Sunday crowd had already gotten a head start at the salads, cereals, breads, Chinese dishes, viands that are the breakfast regulars, fruits and more.
As soon as we got a table (there were actually lots of them, in different sections, that staff opened up as soon as one section got packed), I got my (breakfast) staple: soup. This day, it was congee but with more to offer as seafood lugaw. The ricey glop was tossed in with pieces of cream dory, squid and little shrimp. That did well to coax my tummy to awaken.
While Race got on the task of piling his big plate with the breakfast viand selection (chicken tocino, beef tapa, tortang talong, white chicken and some other things I didn’t get to see … he ignored the Spanish sardines though), the croissants in the midst of the spread of breads called to me. While there were other interesting looking varieties there, I settled for a roll with butter and the (diamond shaped) croissants with a vibrant dollop of jelly on top. It wasn’t a bad choice considering, it was perfectly melt in your mouth flaky and well flavored. ^^,
What did I say about making like an early bird for buffets? IT’s A MUST … and man, did I learn that lesson all over again. When we saw some chaffing dishes of viands, there were only a few spoonfuls left in it and when Elements replenished them, they did a solid switcheroo. What was available in my first walkthrough of the buffet spread, wasn’t anymore. Boo-hoo … although, they did add interesting stuff like soy chicken with (soy) asado (who knew they could be in one pot like that), some saucy tofu dish, spare ribs, another eggplant viand, longganisa, and one of the best danggit(-s?) I’ve ever had: crispy thin, flavorful but not all salty like you’re eating a clump of salt. \m/ (I always did tell my best friend, I like salty stuff but I don’t like salt. Can you imagine how icky eating salt, would be? *snickers)
The dishes available at this Elements breakfast reminded me a lot of the Citylight Hotel breakfast. It’s probably the Chinese selections. There was pancit beside the pot of lugaw and there also was a variety of dumplings (we had pork siomai and corn siomai – just pork covered with corn *harhar). Just the way Race liked it (like dessert), dense and heavy. Their chili oil was no lightweight, either. =D
One of the things I noticed with the offering at Elements is that they didn’t scrimp on the ingredients for the food. For dessert, they had the coconut-y milkiest maja I’ve ever tasted. If that was sprinkled with corn, it would be perfect. The juice (strawberry and orange) had a lot of mileage too (since there was no ice thrown in with the juice in the dispenser.) … I had to water the orange juice to tone it down a bit. *hee
On my second round of breads, this baby got my attention. It’s a German bread, I overheard a lady (probably a manager) saying. Sourdough-like but soft with blueberry topping and cheese, I didn’t care what it was. =) I would’ve gotten some more if my tummy wasn’t ready to surrender.
Of course, I’ll have time … and space for some greens. (“,) The red bellpepper and green bellpepper strips were just too beautiful in their bowl to ignore. #channelingdigestif Tossed with the tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and lettuce and drizzled … err, drenched … with ranch dressing, my veggie lovin’ heart was singing again.
After successfully packing ourselves up with food, we walked around the hotel’s pool. I don’t know what it was; the way the sun shone maybe, the breakfast buffet, the poolside scene; but the whole time we were at Newtown hotel, we felt like we were on one of our vacations (emphasis on the good ones). *contented sigh
What a lovely place to hang out and get some sun!
It was hard to leave our place in the sun on the rooftop of Newtown Square building. As we walked back to our food adventure mobile, we made a vow to come back (to try the Greek pattern decorated cakes on display at what I assume the hotel’s bar is going to be). UPDATE 12/05/2014: Dinner buffet at Elements and Chemistry Bar experience here.
X marks Elements for good food in Baguio. Rise and shine to a new option for breakfast buffets in the City of Pines!
Price: Regular price of P380/pax breakfast buffet …
But they’ve got a promo going on till the end of October: Dine for two, pay for one so hurry, if you want to get a piece of the action, at a huge discount … (and if breakfast is too early for you, there’s Sunday lunch buffet and weekdays and weekend dinner buffets, too.)
If you’re okay with this (construction going on especially if you go through the Elements/hotel parking lot), that is. (Where’s my construction hat? *heeharhar) (They’re pretty high up in their project anyway. I didn’t hear a single drill or hammer while we were eating at Elements restaurant.)

You have a very thorough blog on what and where to eat in Baguio. Two thumbs up for your efforts 🙂
Hello there! Thank you so much! I’m glad you found the posts useful. I greatly appreciate that you appreciate the effort put into it too. *hihi Have a great Baguio food adventure to you! (“,)
Passion that’s what it is called. You are doing a great job. 🙂
Aw. *blushies I really, really appreciate it! (“,) Have a wonderful Wednesday!
Your blog is a gem! Thank you so much for putting this much effort on finding good eats in baguio. We visit yearly pretty much around nov-dec and food has always been such a crucial part of our vacation 🙂 i am currently composing our itinerary, i hope you can help me. Whenever we are in baguio, we usually start our day around 7-8am… I am having a hard time finding breakfast places that opens this early (newly opened ones, i’d like to point out). We shy away from any fastfood/restaurant that can be found in manila. I’ve already listed cafe by the ruins, solibao and citylight hotel bfast buffet… I still have 3 bfast places to fill. I hope you can help and suggest me some good places 🙂 thank you so much in advance and more power to your blog! 🙂
Hello there, Nicolette! Thank you so much for appreciation, much obliged to you. *hihi
Personally, I’m partial to the breakfast buffet at Le Chef at the Manor, CJH. Le Monet’s is pretty good too and considering you’re early starters, you’ll be able to make the most out of it.
Plated breakfasts, you might want to try Beggang in Burnham Park and of course, there’s always the local favorite (for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks =b), Good Taste on Carino Street near Burham). Oh, let me throw in Kiwi’s Bread and Pastry at Mines View for their protein packed all day breakfast meals.
Not sure which resto is new to you but I hope this helps (https://findgoodbaguiofoods.com/category/new-in-town/ ) make your visit to the City of Pines more enjoyable. Happy eatsploring and exploring! (“,)
